Try paying a bill for $15.25 with a $20 and a quarter. Those at the quicky marts will just stare at you. Sad, very sad.
Deral
Deral,
Try paying a $13.27 bill with a ten, a five, and 2¢....if you really want to throw them for a loop.
One of the worst things I ever saw was at a Burger King after the power had gone out, and the kids couldn't depend upon the register to tell them what change to give.....
Yeah, but what is really scares me is that he is one of the ones that is smart enough to get a job.
Did you tell him the surveying "industry" is always looking for young button-pushers?
The power going out is more problems than just that. They may not even have the price of each item memorized, as the computerized register knows the price of the particular burger they are ordering. Also, they can't print receipts or show how much has been spent unless they had-write receipts.
Regardless, the employee should understand how to count change and how to deal with malfunctions when the computerized register goes out. (just like a surveyor who can't calculate coordinates or turn angles without a battery.)
With the state of this economy, you'd think they'd have some college grads making the sandwiches.

Wouldn't that be 3/4 - 1/4?
When the Hard Rock Cafe opened in Sacramento, we decided to go in and have a beer. Sat down at the bar and they told us we'd have to wait because the computer was down. We didn't wait and we didn't go back, either. It is now closed down.
I was at a Taco Bell once and the bill came to something like $4.12 ... so I pull out a $5 and hand it to her and say, "Hold on, I think I have the 12 cents". I pull out the change and try to hand her 12 cents. She says, "Oh, I already rang it up for $5". I and say, you just need to take the 12 cents and give me a dollar back. So she looks at me like I'm trying to rip her off, and says something like, the computer won't let me do that ...
Whatever. And this wasn't some young kid, either, this lady was in her 50s, at least ...
To build anything takes intent, effort, courage, self sacrifice and time, from 1776 until 1968 or there about, was 192 years of growth for this nation. From 1968 until 2010 is 42 years of traveling at an increasing velocity down the slope to where we are today. Something is not working in our favor as a nation. Easy to see what it is just by looking at our leaders and at what has changed during those 42 years. Most refuse to look because of not having the desire and courage to look with an objective mind. That also is an intended result of some of that change.

DJ, that's funny!

I had a call from a realtor the other day wanting me to figure an acreage for her from the record plat. I figured it for her, called her back and told her it was 0.15 acres. Slight pause on the phone and then I hear "so thats less than 1/4 acre?". Uh yeah, last time I checked 0.15<0.25. I just shake my head. What else can you do?

You tell him to slice the sandwich @ two-thirds of the way through the third meatball. 😉
TDD...is not an educational system...
Its an 'educmacation system'....
''Clerks Cannot Change Anything Larger Than A $20 Bill''
"Clerks Cannot Change Anything Larger Than A $20 Bill"
That is what the sign said in the first Subway I ever walked in. It was opened by a former engineer I used to work with. He was behind the counter that day, so I asked about the sign, "Is that your store policy or just a fact?" He thought, looked at the sign again and said it was a fact.
I much preferred to see them making the sandwich bread fresh.
I also preferred the way they did a scoop cut on the top of the bread and could then pile on the innards. Today's slice method is like every other hoagie and they just fall apart much too easily.

Just think, you now know how Barrack Obama got elected and how come the democrats will retain control of Congress: it is because "Corrine Delivers!" They only care about what the government can give them. Never mind that the money has to come from somewhere, they just want it to keep coming and Corrine is happy to oblige.
Compare that to my experience a few years back, at one of the best Chinese/Korean restaurants in the area. We have a great meal with excellent service, in a tourist town in the middle of the season, and go to the register to pay. There is a kid probably 12, 13 years old sitting at the register and the computer is down. He whips out the credit card machine, runs the card of the guy in front of me like a pro, and writes the information on a yellow pad. I get up there and hand him two twenties, he gives me correct change without a calculator (admittedly two buffets are probably an automatic figure for him due to the number of times he's done it) and once again scribbles everything down on the yellow pad. While he's doing this he's talking to one waitress in Cantonese, another in Korean, and thanks us in English like a polished host.
And people wonder why they are kicking our butts economically.
