We hiked this peak in the southern White Mountains last week on a nice day. While only 3,500' high, the trail climbs about 2300 feet from the Kancamagus Highway to the summit. It has a great view of the higher peaks to the north.
Nice shots, I have not been there in years.
My parents used to own the big yellow farm house on the corner of 113 and 113A in Tamworth.
For you drainage enthusiasts, the main office for HydroCAD is just around the corner.

Okay, Perry, I assume that you were following a rock fence for most of the way and just switched over to a line of trees with old chop marks in them for the rest of the way for some reason you don't mention. Did an actual surveyor set a brass tablet at the end or was it some other sort of mark to indicate where things all ended up? I hope you didn't just have to wing it, right?

Yes Kent, unlike hiking in your area, we actually follow physical evidence the entire way to the summit (it's called a TRAIL). This eliminates the need for setting up in the parking lot and taking a sun shot before hiking. It also allows hiking in cloudy weather or before the sun has risen over the ridge. I know it's hard to believe, but we can actually tell we are at the summit without instruments and reproducible bearing bases (no more uphill). Also, in the northeast, there are actually obstruction if you follow a straight line (Google TREES).
We've been there, too. I love that hike.
Not to argue with a White MOuntain boy, but isn't Chocura off Rte. 6 and the Kancamgus Highway Rte 112?
I've only accessed Mount Chocura off Rte 16
Lake Chocura from Mount Chocura.
We used to stay ay Chocura Campground for a week each summer. Nice campground, great little primitive cabins on the island.
Kent-
No question of 'How many ton to the acre' he gets ?
TNAI
thanks for the pics, Foggy. First time up Chocorua for us. More impressive summit than many much higher ones.

Pretty much between Rt 112 (Kancamagous Hwy) and Rt 16. (don't know where rt 6 is?)
16, I meant 16! LOL, Chocura Campground is just down the road, a little bit south.
I read that Mount Chocura is the most photographed mountain up there because it looks the most like one! LOL

Derek, it's assumed that Perry was scouting the hillsides for a timber lease. Because the "trail" has a spiral form in plan, Perry was probably stumped as to how to describe some part of the mountain that would make great 2 x 4's. I simply figured that there was an old rock fence that set him on the right path there. I mean, if you started describing stuff by those pesky old bearings and distances, you'd sort of have to say which way you thought "North" was.

Kent, Around here, we usually just figure that NORTH is up the hill. (It looks better on paper). Even if the distances come up short, the extra Slope Acres are always enough to make up for any overlaps.
Foggy, I caught an 18" Pickerel out of that lake in your picture about 45 years ago. We brought it home and (4 hours later) it was laying (lying) in a pail looking dead. Well my cousin was pointing at it noting that the gills were still moving and the sucker jumped up 2 feet up and clamped it's jaws down on his finger and wouldn't let go. Drew lots of bloods as I recall. Pickerel Revenge!
