watch out for the tidal wave, joe...
from life long experience... to feel a 3.9 you need to be sitting right on top of it

Peter, according to the link, the geology is different:
"Earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains, although less frequent than in the West, are typically felt over a much broader region. East of the Rockies, an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as ten times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the west coast. A magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source."
There goes the Long Island Coordinate System.......
And they were down to below 0.04' +/- too !

that's what she said
Long Island is basically terminal moraine....the lump of debris that was left after the last glacier receded.
The surface of the Island is generally unconsolidated to semi-consolidated gravels, sands, silts, and clays, which, under moderate earthquake conditions would tend to "liquefy" and become extremely unstable.
I'm not that well versed in geology (and haven't stayed at a Holiday inn Express recently), but the effects in the western mountains would be quite different than here in Long Island Sound.
Getting set up for the big one in Frisco, The top blowing off of Rainier and the flow shift in the Mississippi River. All of our coordinates will shift except for most of the local grids some were smart enough to set up. Maybe with all of the digging under New York, the grade will shift and the city will get a salt water bath. Carry 12 foot long 2 X 6s so you won't fall into a large crack in the earth and an inner tube for flotation, if in a high rise, consider getting outfitted for space jumping. Like a Scout, be prepared.
jud
So Long Island is glacial poop?
"Massive" Earthquake hits of Long Island...sPELLING pOLICE

thanks Bill, lots to learn for this kid... besides reading more than the headlines 😉
