Outer bands are approaching St.Croix and St. Thomas.
Maria on a direct path to Puerto Rico and Hispaniola.
It's an understatement that this will be a catastrophic event.
Mud slides and storm surges will cause fatalities.
Prayers for these Americans.

I worked construction staking in Chicago.
The air was always blue was often blue with language.

Be careful!

Here is something to think about: There is no requirement to comment on every post to this forum. Sometimes it is better to just read, especially if you don't have anything of substance to add to the conversation. Its just like listening. You know, that thing we encourage our kids and employees to do more of?

Mr Best was on St Thomas that was hit by Irma not Harvey,
I recall his post that he was going to ride it out.
If you know anyone on the Turks and Caicos, they are in serious jeopardy.
Harvey was a disturbance in the Gulf that formed rapidly but moved slowly over the Texas coast.

I read two articles recently about these storms.
One was about the rapid growth on the Saffir Simpson scale. These storms went from tropical storms or Cat 1 strength to 4/5a in less than 18 hours. Never occurred before...

The other was the disruption of food distribution now and the future in the Caribbean and mainland USA.

I have extended family on St John. Their cell phones were destroyed in Irma. Roof is still on house but doors and windows were blown out. No shade, as all the vegetation was striped from the trees. They walked a few miles to borrow a phone that could get a signal to let everyone know they were alive. Eating MREs at a little community they can hike to. Photo of there house from Post Irma Imagery.

I went to St, Thomas and St. John looking for a job in 1998 and ran into Hurricane Georges. That experience changed my mind about living there. The next day the place looked like someone with a weed eater went over it. My sincere concerns for your family and all affected. You just have to go through one those to be able to understand just how destructive they are.

Larry Best profile here lists St.John as his home. I was mistaken about St.Thomas. A quick internet search shows his business in Cruz Bay St. John.
St John was totaled by Irma.
Nobody knows how it has fared from Maria. Reports are that there was a evac of islanders before Maria approached.
Shortage of food, water and no hospitals in the Virgin Islands.

This is excellent advice. Thank you.

Yes - from the little information I have, a number of Coast Guard boats went to St. John to evacuate all nonessential personnel ahead of Maria. It was a challenge to get the word out about the approaching storm, the evacuation, and the timing and locations where evacuees could board the vessels. The boats had to get in and out of there and then back to PR far enough ahead of the storm to get people into safe shelters. I think the airport in St. Thomas was operational ahead of Maria. Not sure how many folks were able to get flights. Its a very small airport and communications are extremely limited.
