Being a bit younger, I just discovered Robert Mitchum (along with the delicious Deborah Kerr) in Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison last week. This introduction was thanks to my more well cultured wife.
I can discern few positive improvements in our civilization between then and now...
He is one actor that I will change channels to watch.
I liked Thunder Road...everything after that was downhill imho...

If anybody can find the Paul Harvey "Rest of the Story" routine about Robert Mitchum it is definitely worth the time spent listening.
Robert Mitchum and just about every other male actor in the 1950's made Westerns seven days a week, apparently. I truly enjoy watching many of them. That's partly because when we finally acquired a TV set for our home in 1958 danged near everything on it was a Western of some sort. Everything from Have Gun Will Travel to Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, plus Roy and Dale with Pat Brady in Nellybelle.
He liked his reefer. It gave him an edge on the laid back persona.
