Well I flew into Sacramento yesterday and attempted to fly some T-Lines today with the drone. Well...that didn't last too long with the crazy winds in the valley. I gave up and called it a day after about 3 hours of fighting the good fight. But all was not lost. I drove over to Sonoma and had a look around. Grabbed some wine and Santa Rosa beer for the football game tonight. Scored some killer Mexican food.?ÿPlus it was 80 and sunny today. Back home rain and 36 all day. Poo Poo that.
Tomorrow should be a better drone flying day. If I get done early I'm thinking of another little road trip. Any suggestions? Sleeping in Woodland.
Thought I saw something early today that was predicting 80 MPH winds in Californication.
You can see my magnail/washer at the southeast corner of the Cheese Factory (north side of the Plaza).
?ÿi think it's the dot.
@holy-cow It was crazy...SW of Yuba City where I was working it was a steady 30 with higher gusts. Evening news here showed a few over turned big rigs. Remined me of Wichita today.
If you were to wander around Davis I think you might bump into Jim Frame.?ÿ Or you could visit Bainer Hall at UC-Davis which is named after a good old boy from Kansas (Roy Bainer who I met there in 1975).
If you were to wander around Davis I think you might bump into Jim Frame.
In pre-Covid times that'd be great, but these days I don't meet with anyone outside my own household unless I have to.?ÿ Maybe next year...
Funny you should mention Bainer Hall -- I was just there today to inspect some machine tool stuff I'm looking into buying.?ÿ It's a 20-minute walk from my house.
That is quite a coincidence.?ÿ Wow.
Drove up to Chico today and stopped at Sierra Nevada. No tours, but did score some gear and beer that is not available in StL. SWMBO will be happy...wine and beer gifts from Northern California.?ÿ
Those that live here are lucky to have such a beautiful backyard and great weather. Tomorrow back to Fall/Winter and data processing.?ÿ
One thing I will be sure to follow up on if California Water rights. Very interesting all the aqueducts, sloughs, reservoirs, etc. The valley seems like it's all farm land, I never thought it was this much, but wow! Like Illinois flatland in the middle of mountains. Very interesting indeed. Oh and I had to triple take the elevation on a control point...35 feet!
I'll be back in a few weeks, in San Jose next time, plan to drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and up the coast along CA-1.?ÿ
Yeah, I could do California full time.?ÿ
?ÿ
@jitterboogie yeah I know you??re right. Lots of red tape and taxes. But the landscape and weather is real nice.
?ÿ
Its like the Sirens and Odysseus.
Ive had amazing work trips out there.
Even tried to rationalize my phobias.
Cost of living was my line in the sand.
Love visiting. Better bang for my buck.
I'm a fifth generation Californian, been licensed as a land surveyor here for 40 years, surveyed PLSS, Ranchos, Swamp & Overflowed lands, quartz mining claims, antiquated subdivisions, condominium airspace, riparian boundaries - tidal and non; and still practicing to figure it all out!
I am fifth generation through my Dad's maternal great grandparents. My Dad's Father arrived in New Jersey from Eastern Europe.
My Mother arrived with her parents from St. Louis when her father got a job with the American Red Cross.
My Grandfather came to California about 1919, met my Grandmother and spent his adult life here working as an iron worker in a forest service tools factory.
The picture is 1949 in Mill Valley...he raised the house one story, built a garage under it and apartment for my parents. I have the table saw he is using.
the house in Mill Valley came on the market so my sister and I went to the open house, hadn't been in Grandma's house in 40 years. He died in an accident in 1951. It was really cool to see his handwriting on the wooden beams he put up in the garage. He hired a house mover to raise it up and put it on cribbing but my Grandfather, Uncle and Dad built the structure underneath. My Dad said he built the apartment underneath, there are beautiful old growth redwood cabinets and built ins in the apartment. We had never been in the apartment, my Grandmother always had it rented out.
Definitely worth the line we had to wait in to get in!
