We've had a bit of snow here of late and this morning the roof of the Kenwood Elementry School gymnasium collapsed. Remarkably no one was in the gym.. about 400 kids attend the school. I'm not sure if school was in session at the time. The school district canceled classes in all schools after the collapse in order to assess all the other school buildings.
The school was built in 1919... I'm not sure if the gym was built later. It's about 90 X 90 feet and the height of a gymnasium. Unfortunately they had to demolish the remaining structure for safety reasons. It was a fairly impressive old-school gym.
There have been a couple of other failures of large, flat roof commercial building and barns the last day or so.

The silver lining is no kids got hurt. That could have been a tragedy..

Good use of a drone to capture that imagery!
The gym was quite a bit newer than the school, 1950's. I didn't attent that school, but a few other grade schools in Bend back in the mid-late 1960's I would think that gym would be about same age as the one at Bend High?

Early 1950's seems to have been a major time of school construction including the use of flat roofs. By the mid 1980's many of those flat roofs were having somewhat lightweight support structures added to allow placement of metal roofing at reasonable slopes above the old, deteriorated roofs. Now, these old buildings are having rework happening on those 1980's metal roofs.
