I've read below about gifts that weren't so good for Christmas. I got a REALLY good gift (well it was combined Christmas/birthday) from my wife and children. Since I turned 60 just before Christmas they asked what I REALLY wanted. So I get to go (along with my wife of course) to the entire Speed Week for the Daytona 500. That may not suit some of you, but for an old redneck like me "it don't get much better". I'll pull my camper down and get to see all the racing I can handle, at least for a little while. I can hardly waqit for February to get here.

GOOD Christmas gifts - WOW!!
Now THAT is the S..T!!! Are you going to camp out in the in-field?
I don't think I could handle being in that kind of crowd (number wise) for an entire week. I'm a NASCAR nut so I'm not talking about "that kind of crowd" per se. Just any kind of crowd in general.
After a full speed week in Daytona, it just might take you the rest of the season to recover.

We're not in the infield but just outside the track. I do like to sleep now and then and the folks in the infield party way too much for me.

The Hooters across from the track is pretty cool if you are into NASCAR. Lots of old pics and relics from the races, i'm not really into that (NASCAR)but the view isn't so bad
Hey Andy,
I live in Sanford, Fl. which is about 18 miles from DIS. Grew up in Daytona and saw last beach race and first race at DIS. (Richard Petty's father "Lee" won the race three days later after the finish line pictures were studied)I don’t know where you are planning to camp but if you are close to me perhaps we could get together for drinks and/or dinner (my dime). It would be interesting to listen to surveyor’s wives conversation!
There are a zillion things to do in the central Florida area during race weeks, and you will have fun whether you like it or not!
Let me know.
Bill
Bill,
My e-mail is bruner2309 at g mail dot com. I plan to be there at least a week. I've already talked to Pat May. We plan to get together she and Robby. Maybe we can just have a Beerleg get together. The camping spots are available after Feb. 4 but we'll be down sometime toward the middle of the month. We've been to the 500 before but never for the whole speed weeks.

The radio station that I listen to is having a benefit auction today. here is a description from the web site of what the TMS has offered up for bids:
Have you ever wanted to see what it’s like to be behind the wheel of a NASCAR Sprint Cup car at Texas Motor Speedway? This is your chance as our friends at Texas Motor Speedway offer the ultimate Race Fan’s dream package. The highest bidder will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to be in the “Smoke Show” Fantasy Camp with three time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart this August. The Smoke Show includes not only a driving camp with personal lessons from Tony Stewart himself, but a driver’s meeting, press/media interviews, and a dinner and auction with Tony. The remarkable full-day event is limited to 30 people, making it an intensely “personal” event. But there’s more. The package also includes 4 Victory lane club Suite Tickets, 4 VIP Passes into the Pits, 4 tickets to the Pre-Race show for driver intros and pre-race concert, and 1 VIP Parking Pass all for the April 13th 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Texas 500 race at Texas Motor Speedway.
The high bid right now is at $2300 just incase one of you NASCAR heads want to take a crack at it.
That's a bit
out of my price range but it sounds like fun. We try to make at least two races per year with one of them being Atlanta. We've been camping with the same bunch in Atlanta for 10 years or so.
My wife went to one of the driving schools in Atlanta the year after cancer surgery. It took a week to wipe the grin off heer face.
