By accepting the Fiesta Bowl bid UConn obligated itself to sell 17,000 Fiesta Boawl tickets at costs of $111 to $268, plus 550 hotel rooms for 3 to 7 night stays. Plus they plan on sending their 300 piece band. Ticket brokers are dumping their Fiesta Bowl tickets for $18 online. UConn has sold 4,000 tickets and is in the tank for $2.5 million.
Maybe they aught to rethink guaranteeing an 8-4 football team a BCS bowl shot when 11-1 Boise State or 11-1 Michigan State have no place to go. As a matter of fact the Big East and the ACC champions should have been dumped for a Boise State matchup with Michigan State. After all Boise State beat the ACC Champions 11-2 Virginia Tech.
At a minimum the unsold tickets should come out of the Big East's overall payday, not just UConn's cut of the pie.

There is no state of "Connecticutt".
Besides they played by the rules and are in the BCS..
quit your bellyaching...
You are not the first to complain about the BCS...but the best we got (for now).
You Mean They Are Bankrupt Already ?
Just ignore the extra "t".
Yep, they are in the BCS, now they get to eat tickets, lots of tickets.

Yes actually the State is Bankrupt Paul...but I think that discussion belongs under P&R;-)
platyoff system in December is long overdue for NCAA football. Pick top 32 teams (30 bowl games). It could run 4 weekends in December and the finals on New Years Day.
Only One Game On New Years Day, Are You Crazy?
First problem is that those 5 big bowl games on or about January one generate $50,000,000 in gate revenue. Now imagine UConn winning every game to the top, who would buy those tickets?
Another problem is that December is the time for final exams. I guess too many of you fail to see the purpose of college is to get an education, football is just an amusement.
In the Football Championsip Subdivision, the playoff games are in November and early December. Practically nobody sees them live, and only local coverage on TV if that.
My suggestion, take the little 64 teams away from the BCS 120 (Boise State and UConn included) and let them play to empty stadiums. The Big Boys like what they do, play with their little sisters and big brothers to full stadiums, take a break for college and then take a vacation with extra cash to boot.

This point that you make is so moot that it is hysterical. You really do not believe that, do you?
If It Isn'T Robert, Then We Should Just Pay Them.
And some of those SEC schools can then play them for 8 years until they can actually graduate.
Ever wonder why Cam Newton did not stay at Florida? I mean he could not handle their academics.
Maybe he should have gone to Florida State where they gave out the answers to rap music questions so players could pass.
Florida, the state that by law restricts colleges from enforcing high academics. I mean 120 credits for a BS in Engineering when the National norm is 132-136.

every other NCAA sport plays in a tourney format.
The reason that top division NCAA football doesn't is money, specifically TV $$$.
The networks control the scheduling for profit. Geez, even the volleyball championship last night had a media time-out.
It could be done very easily but it won't be until it does not conflict with other sport $(NFL) on the schedule.
But there will always be shortcomings on any format.
One would be that the regular season is shortened by a game. Does Penn State really need to play a community college from Ohio during the regular season to become bowl eligible?;-)
This is true of all schools. Some of the fluff games(scrimmages) should be dropped and do away with the bye weeks.
and yes..I do think that the athletes should be payed to play just like if they were working in the library, health clinic or cafeteria etc.

I don't know if your post smacks of envy, provincialism or something more abhorrent.
Cam Newton is not going to be an engineer. The Heisman winner is going to be a pro player.
Patrick Peterson, a Fl native, who lays for LSU won the defensive "Heisman. He won the Jim Thorpe and Chuck Bednarik award this year fro defensive player.
When Auburn beat LSU this year, Newton ate Peterson's lunch.
Disdain
College sports should be limited to college student athletes.
Paid or not, if they are not literate they can play in some politically correct equality league where nobody keeps score, on the field or in the classroom.
