I love visiting places from the armchair comfort of my old oak swivel chair. Holy Cow's recent post about the fella that bought a $5 lot in Neosho Falls tickled my interest.
I found this really well put together article about this wonderful oasis. And the photos are spectacular. They even mention the flood and the Oasis Tavern. Granted it is not Lake Wobegon, but it's a close second. And rather than bore you with my Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v talents, I'll just let you all read the article yourself. And maybe, just like me, you'll be magically transported there......enjoy.
The comments at the end are revealing. Skip the first half dozen or so then find the good ones. The writer gets his butt chewed several times.
Neosho Falls is near the northeast corner of Woodson County. A few miles to the south is the little town of Piqua where Buster Keaton was born to his vaudevillian parents one night when the troupe happened to be in town. About 10 miles to the west of Piqua is Yates Center, the county seat, smack in the center of the county. A dozen miles to the southwest of Yates Center is Toronto home to the world famous Lizard Lips Grill and Deli. There are a couple other wide spots in the road that used to be small towns. Vernon being one. That's about it for the entire county as far as urban offerings. Total population of 3221 in 2013. The school district centered in Yates Center has about 450 kids from K-12.

....apparently....by at least one armed citizen, and several dogs.
I wouldn't expect it any other way.
Don't know whether to laugh or cry so I guess I will laugh.

Beautiful ballad by a beautiful youngster about a beautiful place. Loved it.
Another ghost town not far from Neosho Falls that was also another pretender to the throne in acquiring the sacred county seat was Kalida. Drove by Kalida a couple of days ago to make sure it looked the same as it did 20 years ago. It did except for more trees and undergrowth. Enjoy.

Please note the NO TRESPASSING signs on the old house. There are plenty of others around the three acres or so. There is another grand entrance a few hundred feet further south.
This is interesting about Kalida and also Kalida Cemetery, but the comments and additional pictures are fun in their own right. One photo shows a cemetery several miles to the northeast along a stretch of what was US HWY 54 at one time, thus the real reason for the marker in question. The poster thought that the federal aid was for the cemetery.
