Does anyone have any recommendations for a program that will find duplicate files and delete one of them?
What I am looking to do is (1) delete all but one of the files that are exact duplicates and (2) find files with duplicate names, usually from me saving a file in another directory before making modifications, and letting me select the latest version to keep.
I know there are tons of these utilities out there, I'm just trying to avoid wading thru several to find one that I like. What works for you?
Thanks,
James
I have been using DoubleKiller for quite a while, very powerful, minor learning curve.
Here is my question. What sort of setup are you running where you can blindly delete duplicate files irregardless of their location on your computer? Directory structure and the ability to find files you are looking for is everything.
You might like to look at this site:

It's free, or simply Google your subject with "freeware" added!
Have a great week. 🙂

I'm not sure I understand your question but I'm not looking to "blindly" delete anything. I am trying to find multiple copies of the same file and select which one I want to delete if that explains it better.
Double Killer looks like it will do what I want and I trust Peter Ehlert's opinion.
I will give it a try.
Thanks,
James
edit: Not that I don't trust other's opinion also 🙂
UltraCompare
I highly recommend UltraCompare by IDM Software, developer of my favourite text editor, UltraEdit.
Reasonably priced and efficient, it will do exactly what you need to do, not just what you want to do.
Just to follow up on a year old post, I downloaded DoubleKiller as recommended by Peter. It was a couple of months before I actually tried using it due to fear of screwing something up. The fear was for nothing. It is actually quite simple to use, easily configurable as to which directories you are comparing, and very transparent about what files you are about to delete.
Thanks Peter.
