Living on the right coast and generally driving north and east around sunrise, I have noticed that just before dawn, in the right conditions, a column of light, the width of the sun, projects up from the horizon.
I take it to be the reflection of the suns rays off the Atlantic Ocean.
This pic doesn't show it very well, but that's the view looking toward the WTC just before dawn this morning.

I've heard them called sun pillars or light pillars. They can be seen here in the middle of the continent too. In my memory I'm thinking of hot August mornings which might indicate dust or a temp inversion might be in play. But then that might be the only time of year I pay attention to the sunrise.
