Does anyone here ever send in corrections to Google Maps?

Do they ever actually correct the map?

Is there a trick you would share about how to get them to actually make the correction?

I have used their online tool to send the same corrections so many time that I have lost count. It's kinda like it's not intended to actually do anything, just a source of frustration for me and a source of humor for them.

Maybe they have to get a minimum of 100 post for the same correction before they actually make a change. Maybe since I live in a town of 1400, I'm the only one sending in the correction.

If anyone has any insight to the process, please share.

Thanks,

James

Paper road maps.?ÿ Remember those??ÿ On the order of 60 years ago there was an uproar in the community because of an omission on the official DOT-issued road map of the State.?ÿ A local town of 200+ people on a state highway was completely left off the new map issued for that year while a town a short distance away and not on a state highway was added.?ÿ That little burg had only 40 or so residents. One of the leading citizens of the "big" city had to make a trip to the state capitol for some reason shortly after the discovery.?ÿ While there he finally tracked down the DOT office responsible for issuing the map.?ÿ He was pushy enough that he finally was able to speak with the one person that knew about the omission.?ÿ Apparently thievery among map makers was common.?ÿ A little trick used by map makers to catch other publishers of simply copying their work was to insert little "bombs".?ÿ If some other map came out with the exact same detail the original publisher could go after them.?ÿ He was told there was a certain number of "bombs" inserted every year and the old ones corrected.?ÿ He was shown a couple of other similar examples used in a prior year.

I'd heard of the intentional errors also, but thought they were more subtle than leaving off a town. Changing the spelling would seem to accomplish the purpose. Maybe -brug instead of -burg, and nobody would fail to find a town.

No - I was taught that you get what you pay for...

We were researching the accuracy of ESRI mapping products recently and found in the fine print that their products were for "entertainment purposes only" and that no accuracy was intended. I would think Google probably has a similar statement buried somewhere...

While I do not have experience with Google Maps, I do have with Google Earth.?ÿ I think it depends on the type of correction.?ÿ Years ago I sent in a location in Bakersfield where the imagery mosaic was messed up.?ÿ Several tiles repeated.?ÿ Google earth did fix the problem.

I've heard of somebody correcting a map detail on OpenStreetMap and the change showing up on Apple Maps a couple of weeks later. Waze has an online map editor as well and Waze is owned by Google, so editing the map there might be another thing to try.

I've sent in four revisions in my home city and all were swiftly corrected.?ÿ I always include a Google Maps link so they can quickly link to what I showing, and some sort of photo proof.?ÿ I remember one was a road showing connected that wasn't, two were showing a one-way street going the wrong way, and on one they had the wrong street name.?ÿ I always send a google photos link to the photo proof so it has lat/lon and time stamp.?ÿ?ÿ

If I remember they were corrected in a couple days.

?ÿ

Edit:?ÿ I'm remembering now on the street name and one-way streets I sent a link to their own street view proof.
