How did carrying a severed rabbits foot come to be associated with luck?

I haven't got the slightest idea.?ÿ I had a rabbit's foot hanging from the rear view mirror of the first car I totaled.?ÿ Tore the heck out of it.?ÿ Took the wrecker 2 trips to clean it all up.

Haven't had rabbit's foot since.

So they are no good unless de-footed by a cross eyed dude with a baseball bat at Niagara Falls?

I didn't see where Niagara or baseball bat came from. It looked like the most potent would be the left hind foot of a rabbit killed under either a full or new moon, in a cemetery on or near the grave of a really bad person.

But I subscribe to the theory mentioned in the article. It wasn't lucky for the rabbit so why would it help me?
