Only 58 in California - 26 at Statehood. They are political subdivisions of the State, Cities are municipal corporations. Self governing pursuant to Government Code scheme.

Was Mist (Missed?) County one of them? If you're a Lake Wobegon fan, I'm sure you've heard (or read) the story about the surveyor's error and how the county was 'created'.
