I use trimble's Terramodel for Cad and would like to convert to KMZ. Is that doable?
Also, is there a software program I can buy to convert large SPC (1000+ Pts)to Lat Long?
Thanks so much for the help!
Charlie
I can't answer the KMZ question but you can get Corpscon to convert SPC to Lat/Long for free.
I believe that Carlson 2008 and above has a convert to KMZ on one of the drop menus..
ExpertGPS will convert from dxf to kml. Just think of all the poor people out there who use
Google Earth but do not use a cad program like Autocad or Microstation.
For example:
Attorneys
Insurance Companies
Title Companies
Oil Company (marketing departments)
There are probably about ten times as many Google Earth users as Autocad users.
GpsVisualizer.com is a useful site for converting to and from kmz, gpx and other formats.
I also use Terramodel. If you export a dxf you can import that into Global Mapper and export a kmz Search for a post by Jon Payne that has the instructions and a video on how to do it.
Edit: just tried a search and didn't find it. Maybe Jon will see this and post it again.
Randy, I think that was something I just hosted and sent out to the KAPS Purchase Chapter members as a link. I just found it on the file hosting site I use.
If it could be of any use to someone else, here it is:
Creating a KMZ or KML file from Global Mapper
I will say that Global Mapper (as recommended by others on this board) has been the best value I have experienced from a software purchase. The ease of making the KMZ or KML format is great. Alternatively, you can learn how to create the file by reading the required coding from the Google tutorials.
As to converting to lat/lon, I agree with John Minor's suggestion of using Corpscon. You can create a custom user file and learn the settings pretty quickly. A very handy program to have on your computer.
If you have the Google Express Pro license, you can use Utmflyer to do
the conversions. Google Express Pro has recent aerial photography and GIS
software like ArcInfo. It is great for storing your projects in accurate
coordinates. I am not a Google salesman. I do not like Google ad words either.
Send me an email and I will send you a free Terramodel tml to convert your data to a kml file so you can show your jobs in Google Earth.
