Cold weather Tilley?

I know I'm jumping the gun but what the heck, why not? I am currently wearing a Tilley LTM8 and I love it, however the winters in South Dakota can be quite chilly with the wind and all that. I know Tilley makes a hat with ear flaps, but from reviews it seems any kind of wind and they are useless. So, what does the discerning surveyor wear come winter time for extended periods of work outside during winter?

When the weather gets cold or wet, I switch from one of my Tilleys to my Filson Tin Cloth Insulated Packer hat:

The ear flaps are just long enough to be useful, and help keep the hat on your head when it's windy.

I wear a Tilley all the time, except when it gets really cold and windy and then I switch to a wool navy watch cap.

I'm on my 4th Tilley, I can't believe they have sent me 3 free replacements over 15 or so years! I was an early adopter. You should have seen the looks I got when I started wearing that hat. NOBODY was wearing big-brimmed hats back then.
Here's my winter choice...Carhartt Caps: Workflex Canvas Ear Flap Cap A199 BLK
Tough to beat a Carhartt.

Kitted out for cold...
