I found this oddly funny last night when I do my weekly search of craigslist... Why would he decide what and how someone gets paid for their services?
Ultimately doesn't the client/customer almost always set the price?
Depending on the land & local survey requirements the total price may not be too far off the mark. On the other hand his terms of payment made me laugh. No way I would accept the 3 part pay - especially with the last payment contingent upon recording of the plat which I would have no control over.
The payment terms are asinine and possibly illegal. Payment for services cannot be contingent on actions of others beyond the surveyor's control.
I'd do it for $3000 if it was just down the road, simple and in an area where I had some previous knowledge of control monuments.
It does make you wonder how he arrived at the $3000 figure.
Yup, that’s why I always inflate prices and let the “purchasing” guru counteroffer. That way we usually end up with the prices we wanted anyway, and the purchasing guru thinks he has made the deal of the century. B-)

More than likely Mr. Craigslister has already been educated by some surveyor who took the time to explain to him what was necessary to do in order to accomplish what he needed. Now that Mr. Craiglister knows what is needed and how much it costs, he is trying to cut a fat hog by now simply peddling it for a much lower price. This is how Mr. Craigslister shows how much he appreciated this man taking the time out of his schedule to help him.
