I recently interviewed the great-granddaughter (age 85) of a U. S. Deputy Surveyor who did work for the GLO in the 1870-80's in Nebraska. She had some of the surveyor's momentos including this item that he wore while in the Civil War and serving in California. One doesn't often think of California when speaking of the Civil War.

May I reccommend Brautigan's A Confederate General from Big Sur?
As I recall there was mention of a volunteer regiment of Heavy Rooteaters:-)

Ah, yes, Richard Brautigan. It's been too long since I last read (or lived) "Trout Fishing in America".

Man.... that was a LOOOONG timg ago.

It was the 8th Volunteer Heavy Root Diggers....or some such.

Like I said.... a long time ago.

That is what you have to love about Beerleg.....when was the last time you heard a reference to Richard Brautigan?
