Cable or DSL?

I am thinking of switching my cable internet service to ATT DSL. They are offering a 12 Mbps line for $25/mo guaranteed for a year. Also included is a Mcaffe internet security suite that I want to avoid like a plague.

Has anyone made a switch like this? If so, how does ATT DSL work for you?

I've had both cable and DSL from various providers and have found that speeds claimed by them are only accurate from the cable providers. For instance, when I had Qwest DSL, they said it was 7mbps service, yet I was lucky to get 4. Also, DSL tends to have latency, which providers do not include in their speed claims. Latency, in a nutshell, can basically cause an initial delay when accessing the internet. So, you can have 7mbps all day long, but if you have an initial latency delay, it's pointless unless you don't stop to read anything. I'm no expert in DSL, but, for the record, the above is what I've read and experienced online.

With my cable providers, I've noticed that if they claim 7mbps, I actually get 7mbps and no noticeable latency. Cable, however, does typically cost more.

The central office is less than 3600 feet away so the signal wont be that degraded when it gets to me. I am paying $ 124 a mo now for basic cable and a 12 Mbps connection and I know there are better deals out there. From the ads ATT is posting the DSL speed has really improved since I had that as a connector.

ATT also offers TV service as well which I'll probably go with

Cable or DSL? Wendell

Thanks.

I know that cable is much better than DSL but even if the claimed 12 Mbps DSL dropped to 6 Mbps I would be satisfied. Im just tired of paying Charter for such lousy basic cable for the TV. The internet is great overpriced.

We have the ATT Uverse (phone, internet, cable) with great connection and no problems so far in a year. It is faster than the cable internet and DSl we had before.

Since moving to Pasadena we opted for charter Cable.

We have TV, internet and phone, all for $99.97 a month (goes to $119.97 after twelve months)

We were told we would get 12mps. Testing shows we get 26 mps!

The gotcha with typical cable service is that your connection is shared with others in your immediate neighborhood, so if everyone draws a lot of traffic at the same time, the service can degrade markedly. In my city, I'm told that cable speed in most neighborhoods drop dramatically during the evening hours, when many households are streaming video from Netflix et al.

I've been getting along just fine on 1.5mbps DSL for about 10 years. I'm less than half a mile from the CO, though, so my experience with DSL has been very good. I'm looking into video streaming now, and may have to bump up to 6mbps service to get acceptable performance.
