Looks like I'll be needing the chiropractor later this week.

That should be enough for many dining table tops.

Perry - It looks like a good excuse to buy that bigger saw, the one with the automatic loader and feed.

Good luck with the sawing.

nah. I like to stay small. This mill has paid for itself already and a bigger, faster mill would require support equipment (forklift, log loader, etc.)

I really should have told the guy I couldn't saw those logs. He said they were all smaller than 30" and it turned out they were more like 36". Lucliky they were only 8 footers and white pine is not that heavy.

So is that an old sinker log by the saw in the first picture?

Nope, it's from a red maple tree that blew down a couple months ago. It's got some rot in the middle and it's been so wet & humid the ends of the log turned black.

Aloha, Perry: That's a nice saw. The monastery received one early this year--donated by one of the devotee. We have a lot lumber on the property and also delivered by local tree trimmers. One of the monastery building we are renovating uses a lot of Mango wood that was milled with our own sawmill. We have a skid steer with forks. Making handling larger logs manageable. But I think our saw is limited to 30 inches diameter logs.

Yes, my mill is also limited to 30" diameter, but with a little "whitting" a 36" diameter will fit.

A skid steer would be nice but it would cost many times the original $6500 cost of my mill.

My yard is sloped toward the mill so I was able to roll those big pine logs up there myself. However, rotating the log can be difficult (for the big ones). In this case, I just rolled the log up there and sliced it in 1" pieces all the way down as far as I could go. These "fliches" can then be edged at a later date.
