Watching women's beach volleyball at the Olympics on TV tonight. The score is about 9 - 2 in favor of the US over Switzerland. Is this a bit like the Jamaican bobsled team?

I was in Switzerland this time last year, and it did nothing but rain. Stayed 4 or 5 days right below some reportedly magnificent mountain peaks, and never saw a one of them.

Finding an ocean with warm, balmy breezes in Switzerland would be like finding such things in Oklahoma. Scarcer than hen's teeth, as my grandmother used to say.

Webster sez: an area covered with sand or small rocks that is next to an ocean or lake.

Not only are there beaches in Switzerland...they are killing Americans tourist with alarming frequency.

I'm not saying there are no beaches. The beaches I would expect to find in Switzerland would adjoin deep, relatively cold water and be in shadows from the mountains at least part of the day.

BTW, the Swiss gals kicked butt. They lost in the end but won one game of the set. The US had never lost a game since beach volley ball was added to the Olympics.

There are a lot of dual citizenship athletes in the Olympics. Also foreign athletes can get easy path to citizenship by enrolling in schools or gaining employment to bend the rules. They are earnestly recruited by various countries. I imagine the Swiss have a decent budget in order to operate their programs. Their national soccer men's team is a very diverse roster.

What confounds and impresses me are small countries rockin' large countries like the Swiss (8 million) taking on the USA (323 million)

Thanks for the memories. When our boy was about 2 and watching his first Olympics, what really got his attention was women's beach volleyball. I guess it was the image of mom types chasing a ball around a big sand box that he could relate and it captured his fascination.
