In honor of the ruminating member of our clan here I've decided to visit the smallest incorporated municipality in the Fair State of Kansas; Freeport.
Although the recorded plat from Harper County makes it appear a bustling center of commerce..
..a recent aerial provides us with the sad reality of life in Freeport, just 13 miles north of the Oklahoma - Kansas State Line:
I have placed an arrow pointing out possibly the only thing remarkable about Freeport, the Presbyterian Church...on Church St. The church is listed on a registry of historical places.
From my prairie upbringing I can tell you from the photo what the church probably smells like inside. And I bet the piano is still in need of tuning.
A truly beautiful example of a small town that has almost all but been forgotten.
For those of you that like facts and demographics:
"As of the 2010 U.S. Census, there were 5 people, 3 households, and 2 families residing in the city. The population density was 25.0 inhabitants per square mile (9.7 /km2). There were 4 housing units at an average density of 20.0 per square mile (7.7 /km2). The racial makeup of the city was 80.0% White and 20.0% Native American.
There were 3 households of which 66.7% were married living together and 33.3% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 1.67 and the average family size was 2.00.
The median age in the city was 66.5 years. 0.0% of residents were under the age of 18; 20% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 0.0% were from 25 to 44; 20% were from 45 to 64; and 60% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 60.0% male and 40.0% female."
You will note that the majority of the population is male and over the age of 65. This makes pizza delivery a non-issue in Freeport. The nearest Walgreens, in either Anthony or Argonia, to purchase Nexium to counteract the pepperoni is prohibitively distant.
Freeport is in danger of losing their Post Office. Probably not a big deal. The majority of the population is unable to read their mail because they misplaced their bi-focals last September.
But wait, there is one miniscule detail noticeable about the hamlet of Freeport! Just a hundred yards or so west of the Presbyterian Church is what appears to be a standpipe; for the local water district no-doubt. If one measures the shadow it casts they will find that it over 200' in length.
Now, the image was taken November 22, 2012. I guess if someone knew where their HP calculator was, they could calculate the height of the standpipe. My bet is it's one of the taller standpipes around. A truly grand monument to mark that sleepy spot called Freeport.
By golly, that was nice
But, just a short 15 mile journey to the northwest from Freeport will get you to Harper and the biggest fish in Kansas. Enjoy the link.
"the Presbyterian Church...on Church St."
Sigh,... The only establishments on Church Street in Orlando are liquor bars. 😉
