Today is the 73rd anniversary of my discharge from the Iowa State University Hospital after a bout with polio. I remember absolutely nothing about it. It was suggested that I take a quart of milk a day when I got home. I wasn't even three years old yet!
So glad you're with us! ?????ÿ
best lotto ticket you never bought. Glad it was a winner!
My sister was born that same year.?ÿ My parents were among the millions terrified by what impact their child's life in a severe way.?ÿ Grew up knowing too many who had been affected to varying degrees by polio.?ÿ Have a good friend who was born in 1955 who contracted polio.?ÿ What appeared to be very little to no impact for sixty years is now causing her problems.?ÿ She had been warned of this possibility.?ÿ About the only semi-noticeable concern was that she did not a full range of motion in turning her head sideways.?ÿ Not enough to be a significant issue, thankfully.
About 6 years later, I was 4 and developed symptoms of polio. Among my earliest memories is being in a children's polio ward. I couldn't understand it that the nurse said if I didn't cry, I would get better sooner, but all the kids were crying.?ÿ
I was misdiagnosed and lucky to not get infected.?ÿ
