These books were written in the 1950's by Bill Huntington about his life as a working cowboy.?ÿ He was born in 1876 near North Platte, Nebraska and worked his way through Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Utah.?ÿ Here I am referring to the two books listed as "What other items to customers buy after viewing this item".?ÿ The featured book, Treasurers from Bill's Warbag, was assembled by his great-granddaughter, Linda Grosskopf in 2006.?ÿ Many of those stories are carried in farming/ranching magazines and newspapers.?ÿ The books can be purchased at a better price directly from the great-granddaughter who lives in Huntley, Montana.

I just finished reading one of those stories.?ÿ It is about an incident that took place in 1910 or 1911 in Deer Lodge, Montana.?ÿ At that time Bill had assembled a large group of bucking horses and some real salty cowboys to attempt to ride them.?ÿ They were touring the western part of Montana which he describes as: " We played at Livingston, Bozeman, Butte, Deer Lodge, Anaconda, Drummond and then up the Bitterroot Valley to Hamilton."?ÿ He had a run-in with an unscrupulous local official that led to a slugfest.?ÿ The locals were rooting for him as the local official wasn't well-liked.?ÿ The $25 fine assessed by the police judge for striking an officer was more than made up by the huge crowd who came to watch the riding contest after hearing of the fight.

I have a personalized copy of "The Gringo Kid" which I got from Tom Fisk at his home. I met Tom at a garage sale where my daughter and I helped load a heavy item into his truck. We made small talk which led to discovering that he had spent time in West Texas (Alpine and surroundings) when my dad and uncle lived there. I eventually introduced Tom to my dad and they met a couple of times before my father passed in 2015. They knew many of the same people from that region and time period. The book is a compilation of short stories starting early in his life working as a cowboy. Very easy and enjoyable read.

For a glimpse into the work world of the modern cowboy one should check out anything written by Baxter Black, DVM.?ÿ Serious, funny, poetical or anecdotal, it is all good reading.
