I took out my Buffalo Tickler on Sunday and sent forty rounds of high velocity slugs out. I'm really digging the versatility of the 45/70, but now am thinking of a 50/90 or 50/110

What are your favorite types of ammunition and pew-pews?

Before I passed the family heirloom 1886 Winchester down to my daughter a few years ago, I loaded all sorts of bullets into NEW 45/70 Winchester brass (including some 400 grain cast lead over Pyrodex). The 500 grain Hornady jacketed round nose were a blast to shoot (kinda like shooting softballs), and the 350 grain hollow points were "quick" (relatively speaking), but it's hard to go wrong with the good old 405 jacketed flat nose over a quick smokeless powder.

There are all sorts of loads available these days, although one has to be careful of those designed for guns like the Ruger No.1, which are too stout for vintage 45/70s (especially the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor which my brother had).

A really great caliber that has stood the test of time!

Oh yeah, one more thing, the EARLY 45/70 brass was "balloon head" design, and you NEVER want to load that stuff with smokeless powder (in fact you shouldn't reload it at all).?ÿ

@loyal will have to look up balloon head. Those look like troublesome and dangerous critters.
