Battery? Antenna? Connections? Software glitch? Call for replacements. ?ÿNothing changes. ?ÿCall "tech support". ?ÿNothing changes.

Set out to set 22 monuments. Seven+ hours later only two are set.

Tomorrow will be spent with a completely different collection of equipment. ?ÿMaybe, just maybe, the other 20 will be set.

I hate feeling like I am dependent on someone else to accomplish the task at hand. I donƒ??t consider myself a control freak. But I prefer to be in control as opposed to out of control. I also enjoy setting control, finding control, and observing control. ?ÿ ??ÿ

It hasn't been that many years ago I encountered what was probably the most frustrating day I had ever had.

This was back in the day I had multiple crews running here and there.?ÿ I also had several construction jobs on the burners.?ÿ Those of you that schedule crews and jobs know what a juggling act it can be at times.

One day I needed a crew out on a large diameter highway bore.?ÿ Knowing the work wouldn't kick off until after the morning rush traffic had subsided I routed this crew first to a nearby subdivision to stake the property line "cut-off" diagonals so the developer could get the masonry crew to build those silly brick walls that have the name of the development emblazoned upon them.?ÿ 4 pins shouldn't take that long.

The crews left the office about 7:30 AM with instructions and I planned on leaving about 9 AM to meet the crew at the highway bore.?ÿ I called when I left to make sure they had completed setting the pins for the developer and (should have been) close to the highway job.?ÿ

That was a 'negatory' rubber ducky..."Having some trouble with the DC" was the official reply.?ÿ I headed over to that job just to see wtf was keeping them from setting 4 pins.?ÿ It wouldn't be 15 minutes until my phone started blowing up with calls from the bore contractor.

The crew had some radio interference with their base, rover and DC.?ÿ I screwed with it long enough to realize it wasn't going to change.?ÿ Increasingly frustrated and approaching anger I told them to quick "f-ing around" and break out the TS.?ÿ No can do.?ÿ TS was sitting in the closet at the office.?ÿ Sh*t.

I wound up cross-taping the four pins with a chain that hadn't been dropped in years and a bunch of dumbass kids that didn't have the slightest idea what to do if their DC wouldn't connect...using the only plumb bob we could come up with..which btw was MINE in MY console.?ÿ I bet I've bought a hundred plumb bobs and I could only find ONE.?ÿ Finally made it to the bore job with a crew about an hour late.?ÿ

I was seriously thinking of firing every last employee that couldn't survey without something digital in their hands...but I realized it was my own damned fault...and I would be left with practically no employees.

I hope your day goes better today.

Crap, sometimes you are the louisville slugger and sometimes you are the ball.

Had a crew stake a house out for new construction which they did, but on the wrong lot. Set up on wrong point and didn't check backsight distance or tie into another control point to verify where in hell they were. Well 5 days later we send a different crew to check the location of the foundation prior to the slab being poured and discovered the mistake. It was going to be a monolithic slab so only the form boards, steel, and plumbing were in place. The whole thing besides the embarrassment of blemishing our reputation cost close to 9K to resolve. This was an "experienced" crew too and knew better. They are no longer employed by me.?ÿ
