Hello,

Can someone please recommend a good website or book on how to determine your salary?

Any advice on how to negotiate a raise in pay?

Thanks,

rlshound

Shows the averages, but getting them is ALL up to you. When I go in to negotiate I make sure my concealed carry permit is in plain sight. :'(

Hound:

Didn't you say you were going to test for Oklahoma pretty soon?

Anyway, what I wanted to tell you about licensing (or multiple licensing) is that I've never known anybody....ANYBODY...that got a bump in pay for licensure.

It's kinda like one day you're good help, and the next day you're competition.

IMHO: A surveyor in responsible charge should be paid a minimum of 20% of field crew rates.(That's salary, that doesn't include bennys and perks).

One of my old bosses told me there was one thing keeping him from paying me what I was worth. When I asked what that was, he replied "the minimum wage law".

With all due respect to the previous suggestions, the first thing you should know is your wages are not a function of your education or license status or anything else that you control.

Your wages are a function of the value you create for the company and the companies client(s).

Ask yourself this question. Will the company make more money after I pass this exam? If the answer is no, then you shouldn't be paid one penny more than you are now.

Next ask this question. What things can I do that will bring extra value to the company and our clients? The longer that list the more likely you are to get a raise.

Finally ask this question. Does my company charge for the value we create or are we selling out time? If all they care about are hours on a spreadsheet, working to increase value will probably have little impact on your wages and my advice is to seek employment where you are paid based on value and not time.*

Larry P

*Yes I am biased on this topic and I freely admit that. Others will surely disagree.

Hello Larry P,

Thanks for your insight and I understand what you're saying...but

Upon passing the exam, that credential is added to a resume going out to bid which then improves the companies chances of getting the contract.

Does this increase value or does the company have to get the contract to increase value?

Thanks again,

rlshound

if you are working as an employee of a private consultant then they will pay you as little as possible; Larry has that part right.

Typically the way to get a raise on the private side is to change jobs.
