Did anyone watch the show "elementary". I like watching it. But the last one was about the stealing of an original surveyor's map showing a boundary. it seems as though the river had changed courses since the map was made over 100 years ago. The Indians had planned to make a casino right where the river had moved (on their side of the river. The map was stolen so that someone couldn't see that it was on the adjoiner's property. Sherlock figured it out by overlaying the old map with a new one. What's funny is that all this murder and espionage was going on to hid the fact that the river was no longer there but had moved by slow and imperceptible over that last 100 or more years. I would have hoped that the great sherlock would figure out that the ownership boundary moved with the river.

But regardless the show did at least respect map-making and appreciation for great cartographic maps.

Saw part of that episode. Not enough to figure out what was happening. Thanks for filling in the blanks.

"Hell On Wheels" is a fictional series set in historic post-Civil War railroad camp that does good justice to the importance of surveying in American history. It is a realistic story of the Wild West, and so far, surveyors have been part of a good number of the episodes. Early on, the lead surveyor got killed by Indians and the surveyor's wife managed to escape with the "maps", which were important because neither the builders or the Senate knew where the railroad was going. The Senator didn't know whether to invest in Wyoming or Colorado? For Hollywood - they do a great job on writing in surveying to their episodes! It's a very violent show - but so was the West at the time. AMC (channel 57 for me).
