I'm considering having my fax line disconnected since it very rarely gets used these days. I know that when I do this, I will probably have a flurry of activity that requires faxing. Is there a free online fax service out there that anyone would recommend?
this works for me:

I disconnected my desk phone last winter and had that line forwarded to my cell phone. Saved me $60/month. I get faxes once or twice a month which I forward to my wife's work to view (and discard), they are mostly from commercial roofing companies for some reason. With email and the scanner, I haven't missed it at all.
Ask me about my junk fax lawsuit sometime!
I use rapidfax, and it's $9.95 a month.
I am pleased. I am able to access it over the internet when I am out of town, or in the field. Some of the people I deal with still use faxes, so it is pretty handy. I recently used it to send a proposal to a potential client while working out of town, while in the hotel room.
I use trustfax.com, old plans were $20 a year and I still pay that, however new ones are $90, not nearly as good a deal, the service has worked well for us, I think I signed on in 2006 or so.

Let me suggest you http://www.freepopfax.com , although some advertising is included in sent faxes, but you can move to a paid version anytime.
Sfax is an online fax service that costs from just $24 a year and it's completely secure and reliable. Check out Sfax Freedom Plan for more info.
