Where's the dimple?
Somewhere west of Austin?ÿ TX. ???? (for those who remember K McM.
Seriously it is good if a future surveyor can tell what point you measured.
?ÿ
Here are a couple of examples from the western end of Kentucky.?ÿ I'm not sure what is typical for the area around Manchester.

Where's the dimple?
I messed up and created one when I put the tip on the stone, so I scratched it out with a cross 🙂

It is exactly where the next surveyor decides it is.?ÿ So what if his measurement is a tad different from my measurement.?ÿ The stone is the monument.?ÿ Not some infinitesimal piece of grit that makes up the stone.?ÿ Stones weather, crack and break from natural conditions.?ÿ People accidentally knock off pieces.?ÿ The only criteria is that the stone not be removed, in its entirety, from where it was placed.

On one side is a 130k acre ranch, on the other side is a 50k acre ranch,,,,,,,,,,,they don't care about a tenth, no one cares, even I don't care and I'm the closest person who might ever care. If the next surveyor goes out and finds that stone sitting there like it has for 120 years, he's gonna jump for joy and won't care a hoot where I might have located it.?ÿ

Here in Oregon, I've found stones with an X or CS Scribed, lead plugs or just set on end. Always cool when you find one!
We are retracing a glo survey and couldn't find any BLM surveys since but found an original bearing tree stump with a 1988 tree tag stuck in it????????
Found the stone... Then a brass cap next to it. Still can't get the BLM to give us the hidden survey that set it????
And another one:
1/2 mile west of that one is this one, took a while to find even though I ran over it. I suppose I was lucky that the snow wasn't covering it that day.?ÿ

Update:
I went to the property. With the owner. It was raining pretty hard the whole day. I tried to see the set stones, but the vegetation had grown over them. No, I didn't walk to every spot where they would of been. My daughter was shown one of the stones, but it was inaccessible and too far away to get a look at it (near the creek).
I probably will get a surveyor to survey the property and have them clearly mark the set stones.
I will ask some more questions about surveying in new topic posts.
Thank you all for all the support, info and pictures you sent, they were very helpful.
