I'm kinda shocked in this long and fully invested deep description of the company and it's expectations and values, safety, is never mentioned once.

Culture is a hard thing to cultivate.

The day when recruitment was taken away from those who do it and handed over to those who will never do it was a dark day in the history of most professions.  Step one.  Do not talk down to those being recruited.  Do not use flowery terms when straightforwardness would be proper.  Do not define what you are attempting to say as that indicates you are the one who cannot communicate rather than the potential recruit being too stupid to understand plain English.

This complaint is not aimed at any one particular employer of skilled surveying staff but to all who fall into these traps of having the unknowing making the decisions.

Sounds like a terrible job with no opportunity to work with a PLS or learn any real skills that can be put forward.  They'd be better off to just subcontract the fieldwork to local surveyors.

"Have a suitcase?" "You're hired!"  If the company wasn't listed, I'd swear it was an ad from the last company I worked for.

They don't want to do that because they can't control the cost. That's why a lot of engineering firms have a surveying department. Control.

@bushaxe

it the only way they can control the necessary evil of having to do and have Survey. In house.

To be fair, there is a pretty good sized pool of career field hands in their 50's who don't have a place in a lot of organizations because they (the organizations) are unwilling to pay experienced guy/gal wages for someone who doesn't have the real potential (or desire) for upward mobility in the company.

Well, yeah.  A business that can't control cost is a business that won't be around in eighteen months. I've been on both sides of the table and it's very easy to control subcontractor fees; but the fee you pay a subcontractor and the project cost incurred by using that subcontractor can be vastly different.

I need both fingers and toes to count the number of times a subcontractor has assured me they can deliver drawings in my standards then I get a cad file with everything on Layer 0 with the line types and colors all changed by entity. Or firms that ignore some of the spec in the RFP because "that's not the way they do it around here".   Now I have the choice of eating $1,000 worth of billable time to fix the drawing or send it back and have to scramble to find work for the design team that was going to be using the survey files, and screw up my project timeline to get the design to the client.
