Forum Updates: 2019-03-03

This is a big update. Here goes!

Threaded Forum Layout

Back in the day, when we started BeerLeg.com (2010), we used a forum software that was much like the old-style threaded format. Sadly, we outgrew that software and eventually reached a point where we had to move on. After several iterations, trial and error, and lots of cussing, we've finally arrived here -- we now have threaded forums (again)!

One really cool thing about it is that we can apply threaded forums only to the categories where it truly makes sense. The following categories now use the threaded format:

  • Surveying & Related
  • Marketplace
  • Non-Surveying

Feel free to play around with it and ask questions in the Support forum.

Q&A Layout Improvements

Many updates and improvements have been applied to the Ask A Surveyor forum to improve usability.

Recent Posts Filter

The Recent Posts page now includes a dropdown menu on the right-hand side. This allows you to filter the list based on your preference.

Performance improvements

The overall forum system has been updated for better performance. The database has been greatly optimized and the queries to the database have been reduced.

Many bug fixes

And, as usual, many bugs were squashed. 🙂

Your feedback

Your ongoing, useful, helpful feedback is appreciated and we take it seriously. You can reply here or start a new thread in the Support forum.

Maybe Wendell if tweaking things again here n Monday.

I don't know if it is the threaded thing or not, but the formatting on some of the threads is all outta whack.

It is all white, all of the links and icons seem to have returns in them, and left justified making one message a page and a half long required a huge amount of scrolling to get through it.  Something looks broken.

Already the site seems more responsive.  Quicker.

Not so much, today (Monday).

This may be viewed as a blessing to most, but, I still have not figured out how to start a thread.  I can write it, but, can't find the button to add it.  Senility is fun.  Every day is a new adventure.

Sounds like you need to refresh your browser cache.

The button to submit a post hasn't moved. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem?

I had the same formatting view issues, and can confirm that clearing the cache fixes it.

I go to forums then click on Surveying & Geomatics then hit Add Post.  All is fine.

I type in a title and a message.  But, how do I then submit it?  Nothing looks familiar at that point.

Feeling very stupid.

After entering the message select "Add Post" for a second time.

threaded

Do you suppose Kent will come back?  I think lack of threading was one of his complaints.

No, Kent wants the style where you can see the header of all the posts under the original post so that he can see who is posting in the thread so he can decide if the thread merits his stellar contributory effort in a quick glance instead of having to take time to actually open the thread.
