Field Book File To Civil 3D

PreviousPage 2 of 2

Now to soapbox a little: carlson xport does not create a fbk with reduced angles from any sets turned. My opinion is that this incorrectly represents that data in a least squares adjustment done inside the c3d survey database.

Yep. Tried that and moved on. If you want to balance things, run the export to Star*Net (buy the conversion routine) and balance there. It is still a simple text file (ascii file if you prefer) and you know what you are getting out the back end.

Use a txt from Star*Net imported through the database and you still have the field to finish and all the rest.

Or, you can just use the Carlson desktop software.

@ Norman_Oklahoma

I’m interested in what office CAD and survey package you are using.

The person who processes our jobs uses Civil 3D 2024, maybe 2025. Our crew is using Carlson SurvPC 7 on a Carlson RT5 tablet. Although we haven't used it yet, we love the Field to Finish program and the fact that it can export a .dxf file. I want to create an FCL (Feature Code List), but I don't have access to any computer that has Carlson Survey IntelliCAD on it. We have several workstations in our office that do. After doing some Internet research, I understand that I need Carlson X-Port to create an FCL. I wonder what kind of file an FCL is. Is it a CSV file? If it is, I think it would be nice if I could create my own and load it into SurvPC 7.

Carlson makes a desktop utility “Carlson X-Port”. Last I knew you can download it from Carlson’s site, it may function enough without registering (I don’t recall). But if you find you need to register it you’ll want to contact either Carlson or the merchant that sold you Carlson SurvPC for a registration/license key.

I found the Carlson download page last night. I'd rather get a registered copy. My immediate focus is to create a Feature Code List.

I'm not sure if your meaning is that you are creating linework in the dc and exporting a dxf to CAD. If so, I rather dislike that workflow. I recently wrote in another thread how I prefer to export the raw data, examine it, edit as necessary, and reprocess it. Measure ups and descriptor errors are the most common problems, Unrefined control data in the dc is another big one

If one is collecting topographic and/or boundary data from fully resolved control then a direct export can be acceptable. But I hardly ever find that is the case for me. More to the point it is practically as much work to check on that control as it is to reprocess, so that is what I do - and I just don't much concern myself with what version of the control might be in the dc at any given time.

C3d's F2f works very well and meshes nicely with its surface creation. If you like to use an alternate F2f on the dc for collection purposes, and can still get descriptors on the points that work with the C3d F2f, then that would be great, but if I could only have on it would be the C3d version.

Note that I have found that a set of points coded for C3d's F2f will process very nicely in Carlson Survey's F2f when set up in a compatible manner.

@field-dog If you wan to activate X-port, you have to download it and set it up. Then you could generate a registration form that you can fax (!!!) or rather send by e-mail to get an activation code.

Mine was something as :

Carlson X-Port Registration Sheet
Please fax this page to (606) 564-9525 using FINE fax resolution,
save and email it to [email protected] or
call Carlson Software (606) 564-5028 and read this information to the support specialist.

I got a very quick answer (even if my Carlson support is over).

I don't know if it can help you, in the menu you can find:

Tools
Import Raw Data >

Export Raw Data >

Export Fieldbook

Setup Filedbook codes

After doing some Internet research, I understand that I need Carlson X-Port to create an FCL. I wonder what kind of file an FCL is.

Hmm, been a while since I've used SurvCE/PC, but I thought it was possible to create a code list right on the data collector with basically every brand of equipment. It's usually a little more convenient to do it on a full size computer, but I think it would be a little weird if you had to have some other program to do it especially with gear as user friendly as Carlson.

Surely you guys are labeling your points some way already? Are you just manually typing some sort of code in every time you shoot a point?

You should be able to create an FCL in the data collector. Once created, I believe you can open it as a csv file (just change the extension), and see the format. I believe that is how we entered our codes when we started (csv then changed it to .fcl).
