After this spring I will have wrapped up my Sophomore year in a surveying bachelor's?ÿprogram. I can find employment locally, but I was wondering if anyone had any pointers on looking for internships elsewhere. I would like to take this opportunity to find a job out of state and see the country a little.
I would like something that pays per diem, or covers living expenses in some way. I currently rent an apartment, and I would have to sublet it for the summer and find a 3-month rental where I work or cover the cost of renting two apartments at once. Things make a lot more sense if, for example, a company is covering the cost of a hotel room.
I would need the employment or internship to last up to about 12 weeks, from early-May to late August.?ÿ?ÿ
I am not aware of anything that meets my requirements - I am being (too?) picky, but I need the numbers to?ÿwork. If something like this does exist in the survey world, however, I would like to hear about it.
I have heard mumblings about the BLM offering summer internships resembling what I am looking for, but I haven't been able to find anything concrete - perhaps it is a little early in the academic year??ÿ
If anyone can provide any suggestions or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.?ÿ

Have you talked to your State board or your Program director??ÿ Seems like those would be great places to start, and may already have those lines of communication open and situations set in place currently.?ÿ

I have not reached out to my state board, thanks for the suggestion. This is finals week for me - my last test is tomorrow, but I am reaching out to some contacts now that my schedule is dying down a bit, including college faculty.?ÿ Thanks again!?ÿ
Companies providing surveys for utility companies often pay the field crew per diem because they are located so far from the home office, independently of any internship program. A job on one of those crews would meet those criteria, although "seeing the country" would likely consist of bushwacking through the wilderness with occasional visits to the nearest small town.
I'm under no illusions. Getting out and about and seeing some different topography is all I'm looking for. I don't expect a cosmopolitan, worldly adventure or anything. I'm also 27, started college after about 8 years of manual labor of one kind or another, so I know what I might be getting into.?ÿ

We pay our interns, they are really part time workers, they work full time but don't get benefits.?ÿ In our case we only pay per diem if you work out of town.?ÿ The pay you get should be enough to cover your expenses.

The City of San Francisco offers internships.?ÿ While it doesn't show surveying specifically, those in surveying curriculum are encouraged to apply.?ÿ While the City pays a wage, I do not believe it covers housing.?ÿ

Don't let the title stop you "Geo" is pretty broad including geomatics.?ÿ Here in our Alaska Region, we have had GIPS conduct structure from motion jobs including setting ground control and a ton of flying (all our planes need an observer and someone running the event marking and camera gear).?ÿ Other students in the past have helped observe historical benchmarks along the Denali Park Road and submit OPUS Shared solutions.?ÿ Lots of jobs conducting mapping grade jobs mapping utilities, buildings, roads, trails.?ÿ ?ÿI would show you those links, but due to government shutdown, sites are down.
Working in National Parks pays you in sunsets and sunrises and with your time off, you have wilderness at your beck and call.

We have an intern every summer, ususally a civil engineering student. We are in northern NJ, about 3mi from the NY border, spend a lot of time in the NY metro but it is a unique type of work. Interns are paid fairly well, better than I made FT out of college in the early 2000's.
Consider the south dakota DOT, we hire plenty of interns each summer
