Other than filling out the standard forms and such for employment, does anybody have any opinions based on experience working in these positions?

I've seen a few ads placed lately and have thought to apply. How long do they take to decide (I haven't seen any dates posted). I've wondered how many applications come in given the current economy.

government is not fast, it takes patience.

when you fill out a government application don't use your own words. use the words in the class specification or job advertisement. the initial reviewer is often an HR person who knows nothing about the profession so you want them to understand your experience fits the position by using the same words and phrases. be honest but use their words.

I am in the process of trying to fill one of these postions right now. I work for Uncle Sam. We advertised for a GS06/07 Survey Technician (Instrument Man/Rod Man) and we had 111 applicants. Several of the top canidates are licensed in multiple states. The problem is that when they saw the pay range, they assumed that becasue they had many years of experience they would start at the top of the pay scale. The GS system does not work that way. It takes a long time to fill one of these positions too.

D.K. has some good advice there.
