Perhaps his professor gave him a poor grade on axe sharpness, so he wanted to prove him wrong by cutting down a landmark...?

That was the case when the leaning pine was cut down at Paul Smith's College in 1971.

It looks like he was supposed to hack the off-line tree but didn't pay attention in Hack101 class, he thought he was supposed to chop it down.

His Father said in an exasperated tone, "I said chop AS IN ONE CHOP not chop down the tree" facepalm
