How about a reconditioned 2" Leica TCR702auto I've got for $3,500. It's older yes, but a very nice instrument for doing topo because you just have to get the prism in the field of view and the servos do the rest. No fine tuning of the crosshairs. Your current data collector should work fine with it. If it breaks, parts can be a little hard to find, but so far I haven't had a problem keeping them going with parts from TPS1100's. You get nice Leica features like endless tangent screws, laser plummet, onboard field calibration routine, Leica optics, etc. Or if you want to spend more money, I second the TS09 idea, or a good used Leica 1200 robot.

Yes Nate, the R in Leica models designates reflectorless. I believe this instrument is rated at 170m.

Thanks again for all the input and discussion above... so at least for now we've decided to have the current Nikon repaired for the 3rd time (same issue). Assuming due to the higher cost of repair they are doing it properly this time.
Knowing how long these can last for may have changed my mind about sourcing a newer unit. At least for time being. We'll see how this repair goes and will check back with the suggestions above
Cheers
Look into something like the focus 35. Package may be like 14k for everything, legs, Ranger, gun, pole, prism. But you can do 0% financing for 24 months. It's a no brainer and will pay for itself in no time
