Hi.?ÿ ?ÿToday, my robotic had a terrible time tracking.?ÿ ?ÿWhile staking a Living e, the machine simply quit tracking after 150 feet.?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ I changed batteries on the R2 unit and the station. Usually, I can get about 300 feet out with success.?ÿ Not sure what happened.?ÿ ?ÿThis is the infrared com station?ÿ
Anyone have an idea ??ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿThank you?ÿ
Is it the communication of tracking that is the issue?
If it is the communcation try cleaning the metal connections in the instrument handle and the infrared panels on the handle and rc2. Also use a new cable.
If it is the autolock tracking get some new batteries.
The rc2 should not matter for tracking distance. ?ÿ That is ?ÿinstrument cal/adjustment or prism issue. ?ÿSome of the 800 series would struggle beyond 300'.
If its a newer 8000/8200 with prismless ability tracking should work well beyond that. Limited by the rang? of infrared communication.
Last week, I could link at 300 feet more or less, provided no reflective interference was around.?ÿ Yesterday 143' was as far as I could go.?ÿ When the rd2"find me" button was pressed, the station would flash a red light, but do nothing else.?ÿ ?ÿ Batteries were / are fresh. No obstruction.?ÿ?ÿ
Not sure if this old guy is giving up the ghost ??ÿ ?ÿ I've been told that perhaps the tracking edm is failing?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿif so, is that a repair ??ÿ ?ÿ I'd like to keep this guy another year.?ÿ Unless it's a lost cause. Then I'll have to opt for a decent used gun and data collector and software.?ÿ?ÿ

I bet it's caused by bad antenna or built-in radio module. I replace external antenna of ranger data collector every three or four months.?ÿ

The Unity I have is a Topcon GTS 825a?ÿ It uses the infrared communication between the RC2 unit and the instrument.?ÿ He was tracking pretty good at 500 feet two years ago and has always performed well when called to duty.?ÿ This last episode the gun found the prism, but refused to send position data to the hand held.?ÿ When I pressed the "find me" button, the red light would flash but send no data.?ÿ UNLESS I was 150 or closer.?ÿ Someone suggested the tracking EDM may be shot.?ÿ Not sure if that is a repairable item or if the unit has become a paper weight.?ÿ ?ÿ
Having recently purchased a sweet GNSS kit, I really dont have the funds to replace the Robotic this year, So I am hoping that this unit can be "bandaided" and give me one more year of service.?ÿ ?ÿ There IS a topcon service center within 75 miles.?ÿ I will take the unit to them, but I was hoping that someone may have experienced similar tragedies and can spare me a trip.?ÿ?ÿ

Thanks.?ÿ I've been scouring the manual for a factory reset method.?ÿ ?ÿThe local topcon rep thinks the issue is an EDM amplifier board . If that's the case, then the unit is done.?ÿ ?ÿApparently topcon doesn't support the robotics beyond a few years.?ÿ?ÿ
I'll clean him up like you say, and try again this weekend.?ÿ ?ÿOdd that I can manually shoot a long distance, but not remotely ??ÿ

I think you have it !!?ÿ the RC unit wasn't sending signals to the Instrument beyond 150 feet or so, Yet the gun would track me all the way to a 300 foot backsite.?ÿ Plus, The instrument will shoot a good distance manually.?ÿ ?ÿ
Topcon has it now and will test and outfit with a radio system I will lose the "Find me" button on the RC but that will also cut down on the instrument spinning around in circles every time a car drives by or a girl / lady with a sequin purse walks by . . .(that actually happened)?ÿ
I will let you know how it turns out.?ÿ Maybe save me from buying a different Robotic.?ÿ
