I think the 10 year old Sokkia gps I use may have kicked the bucket today. I've done every step I can think of to get it up and running again, trying two different softwares (fieldgenius and Magnet field) and both of them result in no link between the base and radio once the base is started and then I connect to the rover.?ÿ
What happened is it worked fine all day and at lunch I changed the battery and when I reconnected to the rover I got "modem initialization failed". I've seen this error a couple of times before but I was always able to get it connected after a couple of tries, sometimes having to go through "config radio". This time it wasn't having it, and in the config radio I noticed some of the settings had changed so I fixed them and tried again, still failed.?ÿ
I went back to the base and checked that the radio settings for it and the rover matched, found one discrepancy and fixed it. Long pressed the power button to do a "factory reset" which really just clears memory out I guess, it doesn't typically require any setup after doing it on this GPS.?ÿ
After this I can start the base and the modem initialization error is no longer happening on the rover but I get no link to the base. At this point I exited fieldgenius and started a job in magnet field and i get to the same problem. The base will connect and start and when I connect to the rover I get no link to the base.?ÿ
I just realized I didn't check the settings in magnet but I am 99.9% sure I got them correct in fieldgenius and there's no real reason the settings would change in magnet also? No link in either one.?ÿ
Tomorrow morning I will double check the settings in magnet and try everything again but I am beginning to think it's hardware failure. Any suggestions?
Luckily I only use the GPS once every couple of weeks on average. I do almost all my work with the robot.?ÿ
10 years is a good long run for any instrument. I'm not familiar with that model, but transmitter link problems often begin with the antennas?ÿ?ÿ
I will try swapping out the antennas with the spare new one. I did inspect both of them and they look like new still and were clipped in properly.?ÿ
It would be nice to get something a bit more modern for the canopy shots, but I don't need GPS often so it made sense to use the old one as long as it still worked.?ÿ
Are there any cables in your setup? They are the first wear and tear item to go out.
?ÿ
Are your radio lights flashing correctly? Radio card failure at that age be my guess (assuming settings are correct) but really a case of dealer pulling it apart if not a simple setting fix.
@lukenz?ÿ
No cables on this setup, just the removable antennas which never have to be removed and they look fine.?ÿ
Definitely need to check all settings in both recivers to ensure harmony.?ÿ At last resort replace firmware for modem and recievers.?ÿ
Instead of magnet field, use TRU (or SRU) to set all the radio parameters. Latest version is 3.6, but your older version should work just fine
@russ455?ÿ
We probably have the latest version as I installed it to update the firmware less than a year ago. Everything was working fine after the firmware update, seemed like it maybe did better in canopy.?ÿ
It seems to be working again in Magnet only, after running the "config radio" a couple times, but always fails in fieldgenius. As long as it keeps working (still not sure why this happened) I'll just use magnet field for gps and transfer coordinates to Fieldgenius for the TS work?ÿ
