I'm in the market for a new locator to replace my 37 year old Schonstedt. Just because of the longevity of my Schonstedt I'm leaning towards buying another. However, I've heard some very good things about the Subsurface units. Any recommendations on either, or others are greatly appreciated-thanks!

Just send it to one of those places that fixes them, "good as new", for $200

I can not help you on other units as I have never used anything other than a Schonstedt GA-52CX in my 36 year career. Rugged, works well and is extremely reliable. Sent it back once for refurbishing 11 years ago and probably should do so again.

I agree with JPH.?ÿ They are really good about servicing their equipment.?ÿ If it's not under warranty, call your local equipment dealers too.?ÿ Lots of those guys have the know how and may be able to fix it as well.

@jph it's the On/Off switch, and I've called a couple of those places and no one seems to be able to have that switch for the older GA-52, not even Schonstedt.

Atlas Electronics in Texas: $175 flat rate (see a surveyor magazine for the address).?ÿ They redo everything but the yellow paint.

I switched to a Subsurface over a year ago. I like the handle and the one hand operation. I carry it around in my lath bag with my shovel when hunting corners. It's getting dinged up, but is holding up great and NO rattles.
