Hello, Got an older Leica as part of an auction - a CS10 to play about with. Couple of issues with it was wondering if anyone could help.

Issue 1 is that it has never been updated from 2014. it is still running off firmware 5.60. I have downloaded the newest version from Leica onto the card, however with no CCP in place i cannot install it! Is there any way around this, its an older inexpensive private owned machine and I just dont want to spend the money on the customer care package.

Issue 2 appears not to recognise the simcard port. It is in good condition with very little sign of use, was wondering has it lost the driver to the simcard reader potentially or could it be linked to the requirement for the firmware update?

Any help welcomed! Thanks!

Issue 1: think you need at least a CCP basic for one year to update the software. Pay attention that if you gonna use the CS10 with a Leica TS of GS the difference in software versions can give problems. Minor updates usually donƒ??t affect. ?ÿSo ask help, test it or update the software on your TS and/or GS to the same version on your CS10. I donƒ??t know what instrument you want to connect. When not using the Leica Smartworkx program on the CS10 and make use of for example SurvCE on it, an update may be overkill.

Issue 2: there are different versions/options of the CS10/15 with internal radio for TS, LAN Module, GSM/UTMS 3.5G. Can also depend if itƒ??s an older controller or more recent. I believe that in every version of the CS10 there is a sim slot but not always the internal hardware. Register your CS10 in Leica MyWorld so that you can see what version and options you have. I have 2 x CS15 without internal GSM module but I can use the LAN module to connect the CS15 to the internet on my smartphone.

Do you really need it??ÿ If it were an older DC with Survey Pro or SurvCE, I might try to get it going, but with this older Leica unit, I wouldn't waste my time.

As ttt242 said, you probably have to pay to update, and even if you do, it may then be incompatible with whatever instrument you're trying to pair it with.?ÿ It's not really plug and play like some other brands

The CS10/15 is plug and play with any Viva / Smartworks TS or GS.?ÿ That gets you up to the MS50 or TS15 and GS15.?ÿ It will not run a GS16 for some reason.?ÿ It will not run any captivate hardware (a Captivate CS can run any Viva or Smartworks hardware).?ÿ The caveat being that the CS and instruments need to be on the same major release.?ÿ A CS running v5.X can not run a TS on v9.X.?ÿ That being said I don't think that one of my older TSCE1s will not run and X12.?ÿ Viva is a solid and powerful platform.?ÿ Unfortunately it has a steep learning curve which seem to be the biggest complaint amongst newer users.

The CCP is relatively cheap for the CS20 it was $544 last year.?ÿ You will only need to buy it once since the CS10/15 is no longer updated other than technical fixes.?ÿ You can look through the release note to get an idea of what improvements have been made.

The SIM card will be a moot point next month, 3G will be gone in North America and I cannot picture it being around Europe much longer.
