I am having issues connecting to a Carlson RT4 Ver 6.14 5/5/22 data collector with a Topcon GPT-3005LW with Bluetooth or RS232 to USB adapter. Has anyone else run into this before?

The first question I would attempt to answer is whether the instrument is set in Bluetooth Mode, or is it in RS-232 mode.?ÿ For whatever reason, Topcon did not imagine that it would be worthwhile to have both options available all the time.?ÿ Instead, you must choose which way you want to communicate with the instrument.?ÿ To do this, press the [MENU] key.?ÿ Next select [F1: PARAMETERS]?ÿ Press F4 to page down to screen 3 of 3 [3/3]

In that screen, F1 offers the option to confirm the settings for RS-232 comms.?ÿ Note: this is not the same as the settings of the RS-232 port for connection to a computer for downloading data when using the onboard data collection capabilities of the total station.?ÿ These settings pertain to connecting the total station to a data collector via cable.?ÿ If you elect to make such a connection, you will likely have better success using a cable that has the USB connector built into the cable as opposed to using a USB to serai adapter, though the latter may work.

I will skip to F3 because that is where you set the Bluetooth parameters.?ÿ On some of the Topcon Bluetooth-enabled GTS & GPT models, you MUST have a Bluetooth PIN code in the instrument.?ÿ I do not believe that is the case with the GPT-3000LW models.?ÿ Regardless, you should go to the Bluetooth parameters to determine if there is a PIN code set in the instrument, and if so, what the code is.?ÿ If you change the code, I suggest removing the code altogether if the system allows you to do so.?ÿ The default PIN code was 1111 as I recall.

Lastly, exit from the F3 parameters and press F2 to go to the [F2: SELECT COM] option.?ÿ In this screen, you can determine which mode the instrument is set to, whether Bluetooth or RS-232.?ÿ The active option is indicated by which one has the [?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ] brackets around the option.?ÿ If you want to change it from Bluetooth to RS-232 or vice versa, the actions to do so should be successful if the bracketed option changes to what you intend.

One last note: I think this may be a Windows requirement.?ÿ If you put the instrument in Bluetooth mode and Carlson will not see it or if it sees it, it will not connect, you will need to go to the Settings options outside Carlson and establish a Bluetooth pairing before it will connect in Carlson.

Make sure Windows 10 sees it first. Any connection issue Ive had with RT4 and Leica have been Windows 10 issues.

@oldpacer I'm running into a bluetooth connectivity (or should I say?ÿdis-connectivity) issue with a brx7 and Ranger 7 combo. The dc is running Windows 10 Pro and I'm trying to drill down to the source of the communication breakdown. I just updated firmware on the rover and the dc, all seemed to work great during testing. Now we get it out in the field and it's disconnecting nonstop.?ÿ

I'll be looking to Windows 10 for a source of error now, thanks.

Please keep me posted about it, I'll be working with the same combination (TSC7) next year. testing last summer went perfect.
