In my latest video I take a deep dive into how much & why prism selection affects the accuracy of our total station measurements.

That is an excellent video!! While I got great theory at University it was a great practical knowledge you could apply straight away. Great for graduates etc. to get them up to speed with real-world surveying issues.

Thanks to Jim Frame on here I realised using a GMP101 all the time was possible and only use my 360 for the occasional backsight where it's hard to get to and I want to observe from multiple points.

I find it's not that hard to keep the prism pointed to robot when doing setout/topo and if site is wide open using RTK for topo anyway. For boundary it's not even a discussion. The 360 is five times the cost for less precision, much heavier, and with boundary I spend more time digging/clearing than I do shooting points and rarely can track prism between points even if using the 360. I take the target surround off so I can get the prism closer to building corners for offsets and to jamb into smaller spaces. Plus the GMP101 comes with its own point for getting down on your hands and knees to chase the last 2-3mm

We're getting a remote prism rotator made up for this purpose, will let you know how it goes.

Remote prism rotator? That sounds interesting, how does that work?

Prism rotator patent was granted back in 1983 as US4413907A "Remote Control Surveying".

Aside from being some really good information, you did an outstanding job on developing that video. The graphs, pictures, and charts showing up on screen throughout, made for better engagement and really helped keep your intended points clear. Great job!

Great video. bc-surveyor just picked up at least one new subscriber.

I particularly liked that you drew attention to, "savings", of purchasing a Chinese knockoff prism. When it comes to precision measurements, buy nice or buy twice certainly applies. I've only had one catastrophic failure in over a hundred photo and lidar UAS missions. I thought I'd save money on non-OEM batteries and, low and behold, they didn't provide accurate usage percentages and my bird fell from the sky and crashed into the landfill I was surveying.
