not that this would amount to any kind of revelation to anyone, but this place rocks.?ÿ sometimes easy to take for granted.?ÿ a visit to the dumpster fire of the surveyor's facebook group this morning was a good reminder.
? dumpster fire ?
What happened, if I dare ask?
@holy-cow don't wanna stir up a hornet's nest here, so i'll just leave it at... political.?ÿ which isn't exactly right, but close enough.?ÿ descending into little more than name calling.?ÿ wouldn't call it typical for that group, but also not out of the ordinary...
(ed: there are other participants that may well chime in here and articulate it better than i currently can.)
Yup, there are many highly-opinionated people in this world and it seems most of them are in the surveying profession.?ÿ Including me.
But, I do more than talk.?ÿ I tend to grab the bull by the horns and communicate directly with the "powers that be".?ÿ That is why I spent three hours in a county commission meeting yesterday.?ÿ That is why my State Representatives and Senators recognize my name in their email list.?ÿ I use the plural here as my school district is divvied up between three State Representatives and two State Senators.?ÿ The RWD on which I serve has area in three counties, which adds one more State Senator.
A few years back we were having issues with our Superintendent of Schools, so I called our district State School Board member, who happened to be the Chairman of that board.?ÿ Then I called the Commissioner of Education who heads the State Department of Education.?ÿ On his unlisted personal cell number, provided by his secretary.?ÿ He was traveling between two cities in the more desolate part of Western Kansas at the time.?ÿ We talked for over an hour.?ÿ Two hours later I was in an Executive Session at our monthly school board meeting and relayed to the other board members and the Superintendent certain key elements of my conversation with "Randy".?ÿ The Superintendent went beet red then accused me of lying.?ÿ I pulled out my cell phone, hit "recents", held it out to him and said, "Hit this number.?ÿ You will get Randy on the line, unless he is still speaking to the group in D******."
Really appreciate the kind words. I follow several surveying groups on Facebook and most of them seem to have some level of dumpster fire going on. Maybe not all the time, but often enough to be irritating.
To be fair, unless moderated properly and consistently, this is what happens on pretty much any of the groups I frequent on Facebook. My biggest gripe with Facebook groups is, well, Facebook. They get the last laugh and final call for any issues, even if you and I disagree. I do not like them being in charge of anything.
@bill93 the thread in question got yanked.?ÿ no way of knowing if an admin did it or (as i suspect) the guy who started it.?ÿ?ÿ
one thing, though, is that the group in question is much more... um... small "d" democratic in its membership.?ÿ this particular issue brought up the issue of what constitutes "professional," both in terms of people who are sanctioned to call themselves that and those who would aspire to.
not that this would amount to any kind of revelation to anyone, but this place rocks.?ÿ sometimes easy to take for granted.?ÿ a visit to the dumpster fire of the surveyor's facebook group this morning was a good reminder.
Heading to Facebook to watch the fire works....
Lol
@flyin-solo The irony of it all. Participating in a dumpster fire doesn't seem so professional. I admit I got sucked in a few times back in the day... I try to behave now.?ÿ
@norm well... it didn't start out that way.?ÿ wait, yes it did.?ÿ lmao.?ÿ i'll just say that a few of us well intentioned people tried to point out some problematic elements of the original narrative.?ÿ probably should have recognized how that would go...

The old POB board has lots of dumpster fires, and I'm so glad we all have Wendell and SurveyorConnect where we don't have to deal with that crap anymore. Thanks Wendell!
@wendell?ÿ
My better 3/4 makes fun of me when I'm typing here, She calls it "Facebook for Surveyors..."
And I roll my eyes and say, "hardly!?ÿ it's no where near that ridiculous and insane place you go to buy things that are likely stolen..."?ÿ?ÿ
The mixer she bought makes great cookies.
?ÿ
THRAC OVER.
Opinions are like hemorrhoids.?ÿ Sooner or later, every a$$#@!* has one.
@norm well... it didn't start out that way.?ÿ wait, yes it did.?ÿ lmao.?ÿ i'll just say that a few of us well intentioned people tried to point out some problematic elements of the original narrative.?ÿ probably should have recognized how that would go...
I think I resemble that remark.?ÿ
