I bought an R8-1 with Trimble TSC2 running Survey Connect because I got it at a good price and wanted to give it a shot. There's a lot more to that, but the problem I'm having that pertains to this thread is I cannot get it to connect to my Topcon 311. I know of no one locally that runs this so I'm kinda blind here. When I'm setting up the instrument I have the baud rate and parity correct, but my only options for the instrument are "Generic" and "GTS500 Series". On my TDS Ranger it's "GTS 300 Series" so I chose "generic" on the TSC2. No dice. Switched to 500 and same 'unable to establish connection" (or some such as that).

It's frustrating because this is the first software I've had my hands on that I couldn't just pick and figure out what they wanted. It can't possibly be as hard as I'm making it, lol. I'm trying to keep an open mind here and learn this stuff as I have a friend in Indiana that manages a large surveying firm and he has has told me that to a man all his guys love Trimble and won't use anything else so there's got to be something to it, but right now I often find myself having to walk away before I punt this thing over into the neighbor's yard 😀

I've looked online at various resources and what I'm gathering is there may be some specific sequence of turning stuff on that's biting me, but at this point my mind is getting too cluttered and I can't figure it out. Help.

P.S. I don't NEED it to connect to my 311 as I bought this to use as a VRS rover and I have no problem with this DC being dedicated to that, but I WANT it to connect to my 311 because I think it can and I can't stand the thought of it being able to and me not being able to figure out how to make it do so....

Are you trying to use a wired or Bluetooth connection? The only way I've gotten them to work is wired. It can be finicky but it does work. The baud rate has to be something low, like 1200, 2400, or 4800, I think. It's been a while since I've done it.

I was told by someone that Trimble limits Bluetooth connections to Trimble only survey gear. True or not, I don't know. I've never gotten it to work with anything but Trimble gear though.

Wired, the 311 isn't bluetooth capable. I know the Baud Rate (1200) and parity (even). I'm over it at this point, lol.

Generic
1200
Even
Never
Try doing a hard reset on the collector, then open it back up. Sometimes the collector gets confused as to what it is trying to connect to, Bluetooth, or comport. Another thing, turn Bluetooth off while your not using it anyways. This might help.....
Something else to keep in mind, if you do get it up and running.....if your prism constant is set in the instrument, at say 30mm, don't set it in the collector to 30mm, or it will probably double the constant....some programs will set the constant in the instrument from the collector, but in my experience with the Trimble to Topcon, it does NOT. It will set "0" for you on the HA, if you want. Make sure you check the instrument when you set the constant in the collector, even if it's 0.00, to make sure the collector did, or didn't, change it.

Thanks!

I did leave BT turned on and the prism constant is set in the instrument. I'll give it another go today and see how it works out.

Ok, I'm confused. From the Trimble connect web page I get this "Trimble Connect is a new way for designers, builders, owners and operators to collaborate, share and view project information."
I get the feeling that WGD is trying to set up the DC to run his topcon. With out a little more info on what collection software is loaded on the TSC2 I don't think we can help.
