Good morning friends,

We recently got notice of some software pricing increases; heavy enough to take us well into the negative budget for the fiscal year.?ÿ

Any thoughts about replacing Cyclone with Leica Infinity? Through me lens, we can also process GPS, traverse, topography, et cetera, through that.?ÿ

I was an avid user of LGO, so Infinity will likely be an easy task.

Many thanks.

?ÿ

A quick look at the specs for Infinity would suggest you can only import RTC and BLK.

I'm 95% sure that Infinity can import PTS/PTX/LAS/LAZ. I ran Infinity for two years before we switched to Trimble. Even though I barely got a chance to touch the scan functions, my guess is it will work just fine for most everything but actual 3D modelling.

I use TBC in a similar way with data from scan stations and scanning total stations. Personally I love having all of my data in the same project, in an actual geodetic database. Drives me nuts when I have to go ask someone to pull the super-secret proprietary data from Cyclone for me, because we only have a couple licenses.

Over those two years I figured out that I am not an Infinity fan...but I liked LGO just fine. If you're comfortable with the Leica ecosystem and you're not looking to push out Revit models I think it's worth a look.

@rover83 thank you. I noticed that your last name is Glaves; mine is Glawe. Most of my Glawe family is from Green Bay, where is yours from? And my brother's name is Erich!

@moe-shetty

According to some distant relatives who did some research a while back, my dad's side would have been primarily located in the Kansas/Missouri area (originally from Virginia where they had immigrated in the late 17th century) by the time my grandfather was born. Supposedly there were/are a lot of ancestors in Tennessee too.

Supposedly Glaves originates from the old family name of Gleaves, but I've seen a lot of variations including Glawe and Glave.

I'm not sure how solid the research is, but I do know that my grand-dad was a bit of a wanderer as well; he moved from KS to OK, where my dad was born, and then to TX where I was born. All the grandkids kept it up too, we are scattered around the country by now.

None of the scanners I have used can export PTS/PTX/LAS/LAZ. Will still need another software to import the raw scan data unless its RTC or BLK

Weird. X7 and X12 will export PTX and LAS at the very least. E57 and RCP too.

Then again our Leica scanners won't do that...

@rover83 I was referring to the scanners without tablets and perspective etc. It would be great if you could process raw scan data from all scanners in any brand of software. There was a campaign on laser scanning forum to try and persuade the manufacturers to allow this a few years back and I guess it came to nothing.

My concern for the op would be he might not be able to import his scan data directly to Infinity. I guess a demo would answer that question.

We are using RTC360 and Register 360 almost exclusively for scanning now.?ÿ We still have one P50 but the RTC360 is vastly superior, just in the number of scans we can do in 1 day, it leaves a lot fewer holes and shadows because with the P50 we are trying to minimize setups due to the amount of time each takes.

We aren't scanning for fractions of millimeters, though.?ÿ The RTC360 accuracy is sufficient for our needs.

I rarely use Cyclone anymore.

In my opinion, Leica hit a home run with the RTC360, size, speed, everything is better.

@dave-karoly Do you use it with the high accuracy tilt turned on or off? Just curious if it's worth turning off from time to time to speed things up even more and just have some scans with it on and use targets and control for leveling the bundle.

we have the thing turned on where it turns around 360 before beginning. Takes maybe 10 seconds.

I carry a pole with push button tripod a paddle target, Trimble all the way down equals 1.5 meters. Register 360 doesnƒ??t do target heights so itƒ??s really helpful to keep all target heights equal. It gets them at about 40ƒ?? on medium density or less on low density. I just move the target to the next control point as I go.

I guess my point was that Perspective is the field interface, rather than the office software. There is no office software required to convert.

I don't frequent the scanning forums much any more but I remember the standardization campaign, it was doomed from the start...

I'm glad that the newer Trimble scanners have the ability to export standard formats from the field, but I'm not na??ve enough to pretend that it was a gesture of goodwill on their part. The ability to register scans in the field, on the fly, means that it makes more sense and more $$$ to be able to dump scans in a standard format and move on to the next project.
