I usually get stuck with the task of putting together a seminar for my local chapter of Kentucky Assoc. of Professional Surveyors.?ÿ This year seems to be no different.?ÿ I don't consider myself any more knowledgeable than anyone in attendance, but I'm the one willing to stand in front of folks and potentially embarrass myself.

This year, I'm working on a course about drawing survey maps.?ÿ This is an instance when I will absolutely not be the most knowledgeable person in the room.?ÿ But, I figured it would be a good topic to generate some discussion where we can all learn from each other, has the potential to provide possible changes to attendees, and (selfishly) would be a GREAT time for me to find out just how much I really do not know about drawing a nice map.

A few years back, I had thrown together a map to review as an activity in a standards of practice course.?ÿ It wasn't great.?ÿ It has many intentional standards mistakes, but I thought it was half way decent from a drafting perspective.?ÿ I decided to use it as an example in this course as well and just altered it a little as each design principle was discussed.?ÿ It is AMAZING what can happen with the thoughtful application of just a few simple design principles.

If you don't have someone dedicated to the design side, anyone interested in possibly dressing up their maps, business cards, brochures, etc..., I would highly recommend Robin Williams' (not the great deceased comedian) books "The Non-Designer's Design Book" and "The Non-Designer's Presentation Book" as supplements to any survey drafting specific books you might have.
