Anybody have any experience updating an old computer? I have a 2007 Dell Precision 380 workstation Desktop I'm trying to upgrade. Back in it's day it was a premium computer. So far I've got the hard drive and Ram upgraded, but now I'd like a more powerful graphics card and possibly a processor upgrade.
Thanks for any insights.
And installed Windows 10 successfully!
I was dumb enough to attempt to upgrade an old computer. It's a very time consuming and flusrating exercise.?ÿ
I've learned alot and found some very helpful places to get information.
Email me if you have any questions.
Wow, stop in your tracks. You'll find a modern machine on ebay for less than what you'll invest in that jalopy.
Now you tell me!
The next thing to go will be the CPU cooling fan, or power supply.?ÿ?ÿ
I am good at taking things apart. Not so good at putting them back together.
The stuff you have done, RAM and hard drive, are probably reasonable things to do to an old computer.?ÿ Cooling fans are a few bucks. Power supplies are not super expensive. If they quit, you could replace those easily enough. Going further than that would be a real roll of the dice. A 13 year old motherboard could go out at any moment.
I could not find a copy of the Technical Specification sheet for the Dell Precision 380. It usually will list the graphic cards that are compatible.
The size factor of the computer has a lot to do with what will and will not work.
Try here. Not all are for the 380. There are many different choices that are.
Update, scroll down and you will find downloads for different video controllers as an example of what would apparently be compatible.

I found a 4G graphics card that's suppose to work. I waiting for it to arrive in the mail.
The processor is also upgradable. Trouble is there are a lot of them.
Found a real good application that will give you all the specs on what is installed in your computer. "CPU Z"
Turns out it wasn't that bad. I've successfully install an SSD drive, Windows 10, a NIVIDIA 4G Graphics card, 2020 QuickBooks, and a Pentium (R) processor.
CPU Z and YouTube are invaluable for guidance for making the installation.
I've got less than $400 invested so far. QuickBooks was the major cost.
Shirley you're not serious!
I can only assume that you thought you would save money but really.......... Shirley you're not serious.

It makes sense if you assign value to the experience gained. Otherwise, not so much.
And stop calling him Shirley.
You can pick up an i7-4790k machine for less than 4 hundy. If you buy a top notch pc, you'll be good for several years running basic survey software.
I just turned on an EBay find of a refurbished Dell Precision T1650 with an I7 processor running Win10 Enterprise and went to EBay and found an AMD 102C1270101 FirePro V5800 1GB GDDR5 2X DVI Port 3D Graphics Card and have ordered a 10ft dual-link DVI cord to connect to LG ultrawide 29in monitor.
Have about $400 in the Computer, graphics card, DVI chord, Logitech MK 550 combo wireless keyboard, mouse, and Monitor.
