These are quite fascinating to ponder. The difference in the Westerns was that when a cowboy or indian ran from behind one of these to another, you could see the rock move.
The worst thing about the old Westerns were that most of them were shot within a few miles of LA. Imaginary deserts where none have ever been and huge mountains assigned to flat-as-a pancake terrain.
From Wikipedia concerning the opening intro to The Lone Ranger TV series:
"Iverson Movie Ranch
Much of the series was filmed on the former Iverson Movie Ranch in Chatsworth, California, including the opening sequence to each episode, in which the cry of "Hi-yo Silver" is heard before <g-bubble jscontroller="QVaUhf" data-ci="" data-du="200" data-tp="5" jsaction="R9S7w:VqIRre;" jsshadow="">the Lone Ranger</g-bubble> and Silver gallop to a distinctive rock and Silver rears up on his hind legs."
